Description:
While many collectors refer to this set as the Buckman's Blank Back Set (since it looks the same as the Bucksman's set), it is really the MSA Safelon Set. The 1976 MSA Safelon Basketball Disc Set features discs that are 3 3/8” in diameter. They display black and white portrait art by Charles Linnett, the NBA Players Association logo, and a facsimile signature of the player. Each color border shows the player height, weight, college, and NBA career years. They say “National Basketball Players Association" and include the date on the border as well. These discs were only distributed in 40 count packages of Safelon lunch bags. The lunch bags themselves displayed football and baseball - no basketball. However, inside the packages you would find either basketball, football, or baseball discs. This is the origin of this 20 disc MSA set. It is highly likely that Safelon worked with MSA (Mike Schechter Associates, Inc.) to have these discs made. MSA produced a variety of sports discs, many using Gugler Lithographic Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
