Quaker: How to Play - Combes 1953/54

Description:

This booklet featured University of Illinois coach Harry Combes. The booklet date was difficult to determine. Based on the reference to John J. Jordan, the book was published after 1951-52. Based on Vadal Peterson not being referenced in this booklet issue as in the previous, the book is likely after 1952-53 (his last year). Based on the reference to Pampa, Texas high school coach Clifton McNeely, it is likely after 1952-53 as McNelly did not win a state title until that season. Finally, Francis Clark won three high school title at Idaho Falls Senior High School from 1951-1953. I would have made a case for 1954-55, following those three titles, however, the next booklet by John Wooden is stated as the 1954-55 edition. Thus, primary indications are this book is actually the 1953-54 issue. As a side note about Clifton McNelly, he was the first pick in the 1947 Basketball Association of America (BAA) inaugural draft on July 1, 1947 by the Pittsburgh Ironmen and turned down the pick to be a coach! He was a player at Texas Wesleyan and coached Pampa to 4 state titles in 13 years!

Story-paper tabloids are similar to pulps in the low quality of the materials used, but differ in their format and size. Produced using cheat wood pulp paper, they ...

Seldom seen Clark Candy Cards! - June 19, 2016

Recently, I was lucky enough to find 10 of the 16 cards from the 1954 Clark Candy basketball set. These cards are quite rare and seldom seen, even by advanced basketball collectors.

Rare Album Postcard Acquired - March 1, 2016

Recently, I came across a surprising find - the 1928 Cuban Aguilitas Album Redemption postcard. When I've seen these in the past, they have always been baseball related. This one is basketball themed and shows the same image as card #397, the HNOS Maristas. The seller of this item said he found it in Cuba three decades ago. It is a nice and une...
