1959 Blue Cap Ltd. Cheese

Description:

The Blue Cap Cheese Flixies series is a 144-card trade set from the UK. The cards were contained in at least 3 albums, separated into 12 subsets, each containing 12 cards. Within the sports subset, there is one basketball card #7. An odd combination of subsets comprises the full set - flowers, military uniforms, aviation, dogs, football (soccer), ships, birds, Robin Hood, ancient monuments, tropical fish, and butterflies. The “cards” are really transparencies or slides, designed to project onto a wall or larger area. Each of these cards is approximately the size of a stamp, measuring 37mm x 35mm. Websites disagree on when these cards were produced. While I see several references to 1952 or 1953, the Football Cartophilic Info Exchange site makes reference to the badge on the shirt of a Cardiff City football player as having only been used in the 1958-1960 time period. Further, PSA labeled the set as 1959. There is another Blue Cap set that appears to be from 1953, which adds to the confusion as well. There is enough support for me to date these cards to 1959. The cards are inexpensive. The vintage basketball collector should enjoy the search for this interesting card. I acquired the one shown on October 16, 2006.

Story-paper Tabloids - Feb. 28, 2017

You may be familiar with the term pulp, used to describe some of the older, cheaply made periodicals from many years ago. However, the term "story-paper tabloid" may not be as common. Story-paper tabloids are similar to pulps in the low quality of the materials used, but differ in their format and size. Produced using cheat wood pulp paper, they ...

Seldom seen Clark Candy Cards! - June 19, 2016

Recently, I was lucky enough to find 10 of the 16 cards from the 1954 Clark Candy basketball set. These cards are quite rare and seldom seen, even by advanced basketball collectors.

Rare Album Postcard Acquired - March 1, 2016

Recently, I came across a surprising find - the 1928 Cuban Aguilitas Album Redemption postcard. When I've seen these in the past, they have always been baseball related. This one is basketball themed and shows the same image as card #397, the HNOS Maristas. The seller of this item said he found it in Cuba three decades ago. It is a nice and une...

While there are many rare items in our hobby, speaking specifically about cards, this is probably at the very top of the list in terms of rarity. Take a few minutes to read a little more a...
