1939 Wheaties Star in Basketball
Description:
This is a difficult to find series of 8 Wheaties panels. Panels measure 8 1/4" x 6 1/4". While it would be difficult to pin down an exact date using the 4 coaches that are represented in the set, baseball collectors have dated a similar Wheaties baseball set to 1939. The 4 coaches in the set are Sam Barry (#1 and #2), Dave MacMillan (#3 and #4), Nat Holman (#5 and #6), and Isabelle Payne (#7 and #8). Barry was a long time basketball, football, and baseball coach who is one of only 3 coaches to reach both the Final Four and the College World Series. At the time of this Wheaties box series, he was basketball coach at USC. Dave MacMillan was a long time basketball coach at the University of Minnesota. Nat Holman was a member of the "Original Celtics" and a long time coach at CCNY. Isabelle Payne was terms a "sensational coach and player."
